What is one responsibility of the Secretary of Defense beyond operational command?

The responsibility of the Secretary of Defense extends beyond just operational command to include providing policy guidance for national security objectives. This role involves shaping defense policy, advising the President on matters of defense and security, and ensuring that the military aligns with the overarching goals of national security. By developing strategies and policies that address threats and challenges facing the nation, the Secretary plays a crucial role in determining how the Defense Department will prepare, deploy, and utilize military resources. Other choices may involve important aspects of military management or operations, but they do not capture the strategic and policy-oriented dimension of the Secretary's role, which is critical for guiding the military's efforts in alignment with national objectives.
